Early Life

Architect B. O. Agu fondly called "Bonny", "Bro-B" was born into the Umu Aneke clan of Obinagu, Udi local government area of Enugu state on Sunday, the twenty-eighth day of March 1943. He was one of 3 children born to Mr. Gabriel and Mrs. Theresa Agu.

EDUCATION AND CAREER

Bonny completed his primary school education where he passed his standard six examination with distinction. He then attended Secondary school at St Teresa’s College Nsukka from 1958 to 1962. He passed the West African school certificate examination with grade one. He was granted immediate admission into the University of Nigeria Nsukka Enugu campus in 1963 as one of the pioneer architecture students in the University. He graduated from University in 1972 after the Nigerian Civil War.

Boniface Agu’s career began with James Cubitt and Partners, one of the foremost British firms of architects that were involved in the planning and design of early universities in West Africa including the University of Nigeria Nsukka. As a recent graduate, he was one of the young architects employed by James Cubitt and Partners. In 1974, when the young architect was approached by Ekwueme Associates to establish their branch in Rivers State, he accepted the position. While under Ekwueme Associates, he was the supervising architect for several major projects including The Federal Government College Port Harcourt; Federal Government College Ikot Ekpene; and Federal Government Girls College at Abuloma in Port Harcourt. Thereafter Arc Bonny Agu set up his architectural firm; Bons Associates in 1977. He was the Director and Principal Consultant of the firm. Under his leadership, Bons Associates has carried out a number of successful projects, including Elf Oil Company offices at Trans Amadi in Port Harcourt; Development of Trans Amadi Gardens won by competitive design; Imo state University Teaching Hospital Orlu; Imo State College of Medicine; Imo State School of Nursing Orlu; and Stella Maris Catholic University Umuechem, Rivers State.

MARRIAGE

Daddy met and married Mrs Maria-Celestina Agu (Nee) Ugada while he was working with Ekwueme Associates. The wedding took place on May 8, 1976 at St. Mary’s pro cathedral in Port Harcourt. Architect and Mrs. B.O. Agu celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in 2021. Their marriage was blessed with four children and four grandchildren.

CHRISTIAN AND SOCIAL LIFE

Boniface Agu was a devout Catholic who was committed to service and acts of goodwill. Even from his childhood days, he would serve as a mass server during mass. He was also passionately involved in building the church including lending his Architectural acumen and skills to St. Paul’s Catholic Church building project in Obinagu as well as participating in fundraising efforts. He contributed immensely in the renovation of St. John’s Catholic Church, Rumuokwurusi Port Harcourt. Bonny Agu was also a pioneer member of Hilltop Port Harcourt branch - a social club for a group of people from Enugu state. He often hosted their yearly meetings at his Port Harcourt home. He was actively involved in the projects undertaken by Hilltop including their charity organizations focused on supporting education and training of youth in the University. His love for his alma mater made him a major driving force in the St Teresa’s College Old boys Association (STOBA). In the late 1980s, he and a few senior old boys in Port Harcourt came together and organized a Saint Teresa’s College Old Boys Mini Convention held at The Shell Club in Port Harcourt. That mini convention galvanized the association to hold the first National Convention at the school shortly after and also energized the setting up of branches of the association at Enugu, Onitsha, Awka, Lagos and The United States of America. Nearly all STOBA National Executive Committee meetings held in Port Harcourt were held at his residence. He was the founding Vice President of The Port Harcourt Branch of STOBA and the President of the branch between 2001 and 2016. Arc Boniface Agu was also the 1st National Vice President of The Saint Teresa’s College Old Boys Association.

He also enjoyed a social life with close friends. His hobbies included playing lawn tennis, draughts, and socializing with friends. He engaged in tennis tournaments where he won a lot of trophies. He had a love for music, including classical music, with some of his favorite artists being Beethoven, Nat King Cole, Jim Reeves, Harry Belafonte, and Doris Day.
